How did you get interested in your career?
My family lived on a ranch in California. I started welding when I was eight years old. I built a livestock feeder that's still there. I fixed things on the ranch and high school rebuilt a '66 Chevelle. When was a senior, I dropped band and took my first shop class. I thought how cool it would be to teach this.

Instead, I studied exercise physiology in college for nearly three years. Then the idea of being a sop teacher took hold of me again , and I switched my major to agricultural education. Two years later I got my bachelor's degree. It's amazing what you can do when you see a clear purpose and find something you love.

What advice do you have for young people who are considering this career?
Welding teaches you to be a risk taker. Making those sparks fly builds confidence. When my oldest daughter turned eight this year I started her welding.

As teachers, we communicate with a broad range of people. Everyone learns differently, and we have to recognize when someone is struggling.

What do you like most about your job?
I teach students a skill that will improve their lives. I get time to do research and advance my own knowledge, plus I get to work in a modern shop and keep up with current trends.

Why is your job important?
I'm training a whole segment of employment that is necessary in America. Every industry involves welding. It's always needed. It's a recession-proof job.
