Associate professor of welding.

How did you get interested in welding?
In high school, I enrolled in the Regional Occupational Program (ROP), which provided high school students with training for various trades on weekends. I saw welding on the list of trades but had no idea what it was. I asked my counselor about it and she said, "I think you put a helmet on and fire shoots out." I said, "Sign me up!". Although I was not sure what welding was when I signed up, I was hooked the first time I tried it!

What type of experience and training did you need to get your job?
Because of the ROP training, I was able to start working as a welder right after graduation. After high school, I worked full time and went to college. I built up my field experience while pursuing my college education.

What advice do you have for young people who are considering this career?
Take as many classes in Math, English, and Computers as you can. These courses will help you no matter what type of welding career you choose.

What do you like most about your job?
Welding educators change lives by equipping and empowering people to achieve fulfilling careers that pay very well. Many of my students tried the corporate world and did not like it, but with welding they have found their calling. Another thing I love about about my job is that I think of welding as "the second chance profession." At least 10% of my students are convicted felons and were incarcerated. When they learn welding, they have a chance at a new life - they can get good paying jobs and change their lives forever.
